How to activate Training Mode in iVend Retail POS
On occasion, retailers may desire to have a training database that simulates the same environment to their live production environment for training and testing purposes. iVend Retail POS provides an option to create a training database from the actual database. What follows, are the steps required to create a training database and a separate dedicated training user in the Management Console of iVend POS. The Training database can be accessed from any of the configured POS and can also be made available to any user if desire.
1. To create a dummy employee for a training user, in the Management Console, go to: Administration > Human Resources > Employee. This is an optional step as any user can be given access to the Training database if desired. Refer to the following screen image for guidance on how to setup the Training user.
a. Give the user a unique code and description.
b. Apply other settings as required but the user must be given Transaction Entry permission if they are going to have access to perform transactions at the POS
c. Add a Job Code to the user as required
d. Press [Ok] to save the changes made and to add the Training employee to the system.
2. Open Security User setup in the Management Console, go to: Administration > Authorization >Security User. Create a new Security User by clicking [F3 New].
3. Fill in the required information and attach the Training employee that was created above in Step 1.
4. Set the User Type as a Training User.
5. Specify Training Database Name (to create a copy of production database for training purposes) and click the [Update Training Database] button. The System will create a training database that is a replica of the live production database. Click [Yes] to proceed on the Creating Training Database pop-up screen to confirm. The system will perform a backup of the live production system and will create and restore it to the Training database – the screen will show a progress meter of the process and can take several minutes to complete, depending on the size of the live production database.
6. After restarting the Management Console and the POS, the user can log into the applications with the newly created credentials for the Training user and this will start iVend in the Training mode. The user will be accessing the Training database and not the live production database. This environment could also be used for testing purposes as well as for training.
1. Remember that the Training database is created based on the exact same environment, setup and configuration as per the live production system and will have replicas of all the same master records.
2. The user can be configured for dual access mode, which would enable the user to be able to log into either the Training or the Production databases. To define a user as a dual production live and training user, select the “Both” option in the User Type of the Security User setup. Care should be taken with this setting and it is however, recommended to set the user as either a Production User or a Training User and switch them as needed as it could be fairly easy for error to occur with the user forgetting which environment they are in.
3. The training database can be refreshed from the live production database at any time by pressing the [Update Training Database] button.
